-Mr. KITASHIRO’s Lecture-

I was surprised that he looked so kind and spoke very softly. Before that, I expected he would be strict person with strong leadership according to his biography.

I learned various things from him, but I mainly focus on three points.

Keep thinking about our goal and the reason why do we need to achieve it.

-leader need to show the vision, identify the goal.

To lead a lot of people, leader must understand the goal and the process of it; short term and long term. And show honest behavior for the goal to everyone and behave according to the goal even if no one looks at them; integrity. And in order to let people identify and conscious the goal, communication is essential. Especially, not be angry with bad news is needed. I think it sound original to him and it was interesting point.

    Modesty(think the team first)

-       This point sounds ordinary, but I can feel modesty is important again because he emphasis the ability though the speech.

And my image of top leader was a person who has strong leadership and has original perspective. Then this character sometimes leads to ignore opinion of the minority. But I can realize leader should make decision according to everyone’s opinion and think about team at first.

    ATM!! (Akaruku:Brightly , Tanoshiku : enjoyably ,  Maemukini : positively)

-This points are very simple, but very important!
The leader has a lot of responsibility to make decision and solve problems.

When a senior student in my dorm game me a letter when she graduate from the dorm. She gave advice tome in the letter ‘You might have a lot of problem in a year, but your attitude to enjoy the dorm life is the most important and the attitude may have influence to others positive image of the dorm’
So, I think to enjoy everything and think positively and behave brightly by leader themselves are needed!!

-8- Lighten up & -9- Risk

-8- Lighten up!

Under severe circumstance, people usually tend to focus the difficulty of problem and think too much in serious mode.

At such time, laughter or humor seems inappropriate things, but actually it’s an effective way to improve the situation.
Some examples, Shackleton’s annual celebration, Harford Life’s events to celebrate to the work, show the fact that celebration system are useful to encourage team morale and mode or the achievement of two company.

In the book, the author emphasis three points why the ability to lighten up, celebrate and laugh are needed under the stressful situation. The ability is important as follow.

Give people appropriate distance from their problem

Abbreviate their fear and tension about the problem

Enable a team to refocus, reenergize

I usually feel the celebration party is needed to people who work hard.
I do part-time job in Kichijoji daiichi hotel and there are a lot of party there at every season. People reflect company’s achievement in a year or welcome new workers at the party. At the party of a hospital, some doctors are celebrated about their number of years with a hospital. At almost all party, people drink alcohol and enjoy bingo game with luxurious presents. People seem enjoy the party without any hieratically in a company or without work ties.

In addition to this, sport during continual study or coffee break at the meeting is good idea to lead better performance after that.

Above all, people need celebration or humor even if they are not in the survival condition. Therefore, to distract people intense from difficult problem is more effective way though if they have to have courage to take away from the reality.

-9- Risk

In this section, I learned willingness to take the big risk is also important ability of leader. Leader shouldn’t hesitate when a risk is justified and should make decision. However, the choice to easy one has sometimes possibility to lead great risk.
And more, the point of view whether this case is worth taking risk or not is also essential.

In the class of Introduction to Service Learning, the head of JEN: a NGO group come to the class and made lecture about their job and service. ZEN did the work from emergency support for refugee to support for people’s independent in developing countries.
The most impressive her word for me is ‘we also need the courage to retreat.’’
The group support in dangerous areas in the world, so they usually go to such place and support to local people. However if the group take too much risk, and it caused wound or death, the fact would have bad influence to other group. Then they have to take a risk to choose to retreat when they want to support more.
In the short term, they are better to continue support, but the decision to stop service is appropriate decision in the long term. Though it seems to take great risk to move backward, sometime such risk is need too. I think it also similar to the first strategy: Vision and Quick Victories.

-6- Core Team Value & -7- Conflict

-6- Core Team Value

From chapter 6,I learned minimizing the status difference leads to raise up of team unity.
I impressed the big difference between Scott and Shackleton.
Scott failed to pay attention to things broadly because he holded to formal form.
He only looked at the outlook of ships or traditional hierarchical system.
On the other hand, Shackleton payed much attention to individuals rather than his personal position.
He willingly admitted his fault and self-sacrifice.
'Equality' and 'care of others' are two important key words for me in this section.

*Log*
1,There are no chance to notice the structure of  team in my dorm or club activity.

5,I sometimes felt personal sacrifice when I was working for everyone in my dorm; cleaning at the kitchen or procedure with some office. I am usually willing to work on them, but I felt sacrifice them when I have to do that even if have little my own time for my homework or some personal things to do. The work was recognized by others as what I did, but I felt very happy when someone find and help my working. I seldom felt total personal sacrifice because everyone often helped me.

-7- Conflict

In many case, conflict was seemed as bad things because it might cause a vicious circle to all kinds of working efficiency; productivity, energy, problem-solving ability.
Shackleton knew how to manage these unavoidable conflicts rather than how to avoid them.
His attitude to conflict was objective. For example, he kept his cool-headed point of view or set environment to listen any disagreement.
He tried to deal with problems in small level before problem become bigger.
Then, conflict and caring are essential and team conscious of problem.
Finally, to persuade people who potentially cause problems and make closer to your side and to evaluate conflict depend on whether these problems are worth fight or not.

*Log*
I have both positive and negative image to the norm of  ‘conflict’.
Conflict had sometimes bad influence to the relationship, but open discus and to listen adversity opinion are needed. Therefore, the conflict itself is not a problem, attitude of how to solve it is a problem. I had hardly experienced made troublemaker closer, so I have to try to practice the words ’Keep your friends close, and your enemy closer.’

-5- The Team Message

From this section, I learned the importance of emphasizing the team work.
Although maintaining strong strong team cooperation is difficult and  atmosphere of the team is changeable is case of emergency or various environment., the team has to have shared identity and to maintain the bounds of communication in order to reinforce the team work.

Also, ginving enoughinformation for the team and keeping team members involved the team and thought about teams' problem by themslves are important .
Finally, leader need the ability to understand personal skill.

*Log*

Shered Identity
1,What have your done to promote a sense of shared identity for your team?

-I have said 'We are family' to people in dorm or sticked poster to encourage everyone to keep our kitchen clean.

2,Are your team values explicit and understood by all? Are they used in making decisions?

-I hope everyone understand our policy in the dorm, but it might be difficult because everyone differently take value of the dorm. We have system which everyone say each opinion and make decision.

3,What else can you do to promote identification with the team?

-I try to assign some kinds of roles to everyone in the floor in order to give resposibility and identification as a member of the floor. More, I planned events to band together as  the whole of  the dorm.

Communication
1,What do you do to stay touch with the members of your team? Could you be doing more?

-Chatting with friends or funiors at the kitchen is good oppotunity to keep in touch with the menbers. I think I could increase chance to communicate with them if I cook more frequently and go to the kitchen.

3, Are there occasions when the team is able to come together for face-to-face discussion and
    contact?

-We have the floor meeting once a month. In addition to this, we make pod meeting in order to listen to personal opinion.(One floor is composed by three pod areas.) Everyone must attend both of the meeting, but the floor metting is to inform and to make decision by everyone. It's easy to say close opinion in pod meeting. Therefore they might be chance all can share each others opoinion.

-3- Optimism and reality -4- Stamina

Optimism and reality

I never note myself talk in the happening, so I can find the importance to look myself talk carefully and challenge to change it. Self-talk to me totally depend on my state of mind at the moment. If I depressed with the reality, I said ‘Why do I have to do such things?’, However, I tell myself ‘It’s a chance to grow myself if I can overcome this problem.’ Therefore, I can employ the optimism way of thinking ;‘the pinch can change into good chance’. I firstly know the hidden meaning of ‘危機’. I come to like this word.

*Expedition log*

4,optimism quotient enough to ensure success

I don’t have very difficult assignment now (but I have a lot of homework to do after too relaxed GW). If I would be forced to predicament scene, I would say ‘take it easy. What must be, must be.’ Too much thinking is sometime meaningless if I have no waste time.
I have only one choice to just do what I have to do.

5,My mechanisms for staying in touch with reality

I try to keep company with a person who say severe words for me. Sometime my close friends tend to show sympathy to me and give me tend words, so I venture to talk with a person in modest distance.

Stamina

I tend to do things by myself without any help, and then run out of my energy. After that my friends surrounded me usually give advice to me or help my work. I want to manage my stamina and also others’ before going to my limitation.

My sentence

I would like to be said that
She always smiled and keep being in happy mind.
It is because I believe smile and happy feeling has strong influence to others.
Then, keep smiling at the daily life is good for both of me and others.

-2- Symbolism and Personal Examples

After I read this section, I realize again the importance of appealing to people’s feeling. Visualization and making clear speech is the most representative examples of demonstrating words and action to lead teams.

Shaclten’s behavior; throwing the gold sovereign into the snow is surprise to me, but I thought the impact of action is needed to shake people’s hearts.

*Expending Log *

1, The thing my team needs to do to reach The Edge

First of all, what my team needed to do to reach The Edge is to share the common goal or philosophy.
Second, to admit and trust each other as a member to reach the goal is required.
For example, clubs need to have common goals. For example, improving skills and winning in games or just enjoying playing with others. It may be difficult to have one common goal among many people. However, feeling of satisfaction with the goal is essential to achieve it.

2, My equivalent of throwing gold sovereign into the snow

I cannot remember the symbolic action to show what I said. My action is small thing; cleaning in the kitchen without saying anything or so.

3, My experience of ’The right speech’

Before our junior entered to my dorm, I set chance to talk with particular dorm member.
I usually speak casually in relaxed mood, but I tried to speak seriously with no smile.
I asked them to have self-consciousness as senior students because junior would learn from our behavior.
That’s speech seems it to have somewhat effect to their awareness.

4, What I am doing to ensure that I am visible as a leader

I try to talk with many my friends, attend almost all events to encourage others to attend these events and to keep clean in common space in my dorm.

2012年5月2日水曜日

My long term goals and short term goals.

I would like to reflect questions after vision and Quick Victories’ section.

1, What is your personal leadership vision?

-I want leadership like everyone is willing to follow my instruction. That means everyone agrees with my direction to goals and respects me as a leader. To do so, sharing one common value in group is important.

2, What is the Edge Goal for your organization.

-I would like to take an example of organization from as below. The Edge goal for Zelkova House is to everyone has responsibility as dorm students and to have attitude to think about others. Then, to talk a lot and share each other’s value are essential.

1,What are the key opportunities for action?

-Dorm meeting or personal chatting in daily life is the key opportunity to deepen the relationship between dorm students. If they make good relationship with one with different value or different back ground, they might learn to care of others and share their value.

2,What are the structure and routines?

-Everyone feels equality is the important structure to create a sense of stability. If structure make burden to a particular person, that will be fragile because all depend on one person. Therefore, I think an ideal structure is to assign all suitable work.

3, ‘engaging distractions’

-Planning to some events is good to ‘engaging distraction’. Students in dorm usually are bound by a lot of rule or suffered from collision with others, but students are able to enjoy it freely in events. In addition, events are good opportunities to see people who seldom communicate in daily life or to build close relation.

4, What are your short-term milestone?

-I can’t come up with clear milestone to measure my process to make good system in the dorm, but I can realize some results by others’ feedback or attitude to the management in the dorm.
