-1- Vision and Quick Victories

The last week I started to read LEADING AT THE EDGE. The content of this book was so interesting and served as a useful reference. In fact, when I first heard that it is the story of expedition, I imagine a book which just described a lot of scene at sea like ‘The old man and the sea’ and tell how to survive them in the coldest area. However, this book focuses on Shackleton’s leadership and shows impressive leadership strategies. So I can keep reading with my interest.

The chapter of ‘The shackleton Saga’ introduces the setting and follow of their expedition from start to the rescue. When I read this section, I totally respect the member of Endurance and Shckleton’s tough spirit and still it is unbelievable story for me. It seems miracle to back without any loss of live, but hardness to believe this story express how great his leadership was.

Next, I read the first chapterVision and Quick Victories. This tells me ‘Never lose sight of the ultimate goal, and focus energy on short term objectives.’ Good leader need to keep their motivation to final goal and then they concentrate on each steps to it. From comparison with Stefansson, I learned the importance of balance between individual objects and team motivation. Therefore, leaders always have to sense other member’s wants quickly and match their need along it.

My most impressive phrase was ‘Do something!’ I tend to think too much at my brain and care about risk before I start my action to new things. As a result, slow decision had bad influence to many kinds of area. Example of Johnson& Johnson or Intel, leader must do decisive choice without waste anxious and never look back their choices, just do and concentrate to an outcome. I think quick and correct decision come from a lot of experience and self-esteem. So I would like to act at first, and then reflect on a decision.

I also agree with the impression of "Do something!".
While we are hesitating to make an action, it means that we are just wasting our time!

  2. Hi Yurika,

Thanks for a great post. I was particularly struck by this line: "Therefore, leaders always have to sense other member’s wants quickly and match their need along it." This is a very important point, that the leader needs to match his or her needs with that of everyone else. It is so true that the leader cannot do it by him or her self. It always has to be a team effort.
